He identifies as neurodivergent, and over the years he has changed the way I see the world in ways I never would have chosen, but now would not trade.<\/p>\n\n<p>If I am honest, the journey has not always been graceful. There have been moments of deep uncertainty. Times when I questioned whether I was doing enough, or the right things. Times when I worried about how the world would meet him and whether it would be kind. And, if I am really honest, there were moments where I tried, quietly and subtly, to help him fit in. To navigate a world that often feels easier for those who do not stand out.<\/p>\n\n<p>What I have come to learn is that fitting in is overrated.<\/p>\n\n<p>In the early days, what mattered most was acknowledgement. Acknowledging where Andrew was, acknowledging that we needed support, and acknowledging that this journey was not going to follow a neat or predictable path. Autism is rarely simple. It is layered, complex, and at times overwhelming. I used to joke that Andrew was my \u201cLatin dictionary\u201d because of all the terminology we had to learn just to understand his world.<\/p>\n\n<p>But beyond the language and the learning, what made the real difference was allowing him to be who he is.<\/p>\n\n<p>That did not happen in isolation. It was supported by an incredible ecosystem. Schools like La Vigne Education House and Oakley House, the Neurodiversity Centre, friends, family, and other parents walking a similar path. Not everyone fully understood, but many chose to show up anyway, and that made all the difference.<\/p>\n\n<p>Over time, something shifted in me. Andrew taught me to slow down and to listen more carefully. Not just to what is said, but to what sits underneath it. He challenged my need for tidy expectations and linear progress. I began to understand that growth does not always look the way we think it should, and that the milestones that matter are often not the ones society defines.<\/p>\n\n<p>He also challenged me to see difference differently. Not as something to manage or fix, but as something to value. There is a strength in the way Andrew moves through the world. A deep honesty, a refusal to pretend, and a way of showing up exactly as he is. It is sometimes uncomfortable, but it is always real, and it is something I have come to deeply respect.<\/p>\n\n<p>One of the most defining moments for me was during a process psychology workshop, where I was asked to reframe what I saw as my challenge. The question was simple. What do you admire most about your son? My answer was immediate. His courage. Andrew does things every day that require immense bravery. He steps into environments that feel overwhelming, takes on tasks that others find simple but which require far more from him, and continues despite discomfort and uncertainty. He has also shared that what sits alongside that courage is persistence, driven by a combination of curiosity and stubbornness.<\/p>\n\n<p>The follow up question stayed with me. What would it look like if you lived that quality yourself? That question did not just change how I saw Andrew. It changed how I showed up in my life and in my work.<\/p>\n\n<p>Because the truth is, this journey has shaped me profoundly as a leader. I notice more, assume less, and listen more carefully. I am slower to judge and quicker to get curious, because I have come to understand that behind every behaviour is a person doing the best they can to navigate the world as they experience it.<\/p>\n\n<p>In my work with leaders, this shows up in how I hold space for complexity, how I sit with what does not immediately make sense, and how I look for strengths that do not always fit traditional moulds. It has also deepened my understanding of change. While I work in change professionally, nothing has taught me more about it than raising Andrew.<\/p>\n\n<p>Change, when it is personal, is rarely neat or linear. There are setbacks, frustrations, and moments of doubt. Just when you think you have found your footing, something shifts again. But you keep going, because the purpose matters.<\/p>\n\n<p>For me, that purpose has always been clear. To ensure that Andrew can live fully as himself and realise his potential in a world that is still learning to understand neurodiversity.<\/p>\n\n<p>On this International Autism Day, I am reminded that awareness is not enough.
