Six years ago, I decided to really commit to my business.

It was exciting. And it was scary. If you’ve ever been in that place where you’re thinking about starting a business, but you’re still applying for roles “just in case” it doesn’t work out, you’ll probably know exactly what I mean.

You’re caught between two worlds.

Part of you knows you need to commit—to give the business your time, energy and attention. Because a business doesn’t just happen.

But another part of you is thinking, what if it doesn’t work? What if I need something to fall back on? Letting go of that safety net was a big, scary decision for me.

Six years later, I can proudly say: I did it. I have a business. It’s up and running. Was it worth it?

And honestly, even six years later, I still sometimes find it scary. The uncertainty never completely disappears.

What does make it worthwhile is seeing what has grown from that original decision. Seeing the difference my work makes to clients. Seeing coaching clients grow. Seeing organisations and teams navigate significant cultural change.

And knowing that some of the work I’ve had the privilege of doing may never have happened if I had stayed in a permanent organisational role. That is incredibly rewarding.

On the whole, as scary as it can be, yes—I think it has been worth it. Because I’ve grown, I’ve learned, I’ve met wonderful people, and I’ve had the opportunity to do work that is meaningful to me and makes a difference to others.

If you’re sitting somewhere between “I really want to do this” and “but what if it doesn’t work?”—I see you. Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is take the next step before you feel completely ready. And then keep learning. Keep adapting. Keep going. Here’s to the brave steps, the lessons along the way—and finding ways to thrive.
